Here's an excerpt: "Every Republican I've spoken to is mystified that John McCain has sewn up the Republican nomination. For his entire career, he has been more statist on both domestic and foreign policy than even the typical Republican. He has been considered a "liberal," and not in a good sense. He doesn't share any of the values that are said to make up the Republican consensus on economics or culture or religion. His personal baggage is heavy and a mile long. He had no dedicated constituency within the party." Continue reading:

There's some very interesting history here which help clarify how the GOP got into the mess it's in today -- and why we must keep on fighting.

You know, that whole liberal/conservative thing, the red state/blue state thing is a smoke screen and always have been. It is a way to pit the powerless (all of us) against each other so that we don't see how the owners of the country are screwing us. Racism is another example of this. It is a conscious strategy for the powerful to trump up false antagonisms between the dopey citizens so that they don't see who their real and common enemies are. Same with the communism hysteria and the terrorism hysteria. It is no surprise that someone like McCain would get the nod from the GOP - they have no actual principles. All the hatred stirred up by the right is just another example of a way to stir up discontent between citizens and distract people from the truth. They have no actual positions. The left is just as bad, but they are not actually in power. There is no left or right, there is only the establishment/owners and the rest of us. Too many are too stupid to see that. It's easier to dream up excuses to hate your neighbor.

Exactly! Divide and Conquer........ and for the people that don't care about Left or Right, they just feed "fluff".............

"-- Most people prefer to believe their leaders are just and fair, even in the face of evidence to the contrary, because once a citizen acknowledges that the government under which they live is lying and corrupt, the citizen has to choose what he or she will do about it. To take action in the face of a corrupt government entails risks of harm to life and loved ones. To choose to do nothing is to surrender one's self-image of standing for principles. Most people do not have the courage to face that choice. Hence, most propaganda is not designed to fool the critical thinker but only to give moral cowards an excuse not to think at all..."

Wow! That's the best article I've read for some time! Someone with the guts to say the whole "red scare" thing actually helped corrupt the republican party! I need to add these two books to my reading list. Thanks!

I would add the division between religious and non-religious folks, as well as divisions between various types of religious folks.

It's all about creating false dichotomies and choices between positions that differ only superficially.

The real fight is between us who value the individual rights of peaceful people over all else and those who are willing to sacrifice peaceful individuals for the cause of a greater good.
