Sorry if this has been posted.

Just now while watching 60 minutes I saw a commercial in support of the surveillance act in Congress. It said the Senate approved the act and that the House was preventing it from passing. Then it showed a picture of one of my state's Congressmen saying something like contact your "contact your Congressmen and tell them to pass this act so we can watch the terrorists and protect this country."

Maybe it's just me but I've never seen a commercial like that in my life. I think the bottom of the screen said something like "Paid for by ...... Democracies."

Really scared the hell out of me.

EDIT:

HR 3773 according to the ad

Please add this info to the OP so people don't have to fish thru the thread to find it.

This is Big Brother 2008.

I have two movies --- "1984" and "Brave New World". 1984 reminds me of the current Republican leaders that are hell bent on a totalitarian government. Brave New World reminds me of the Democrats that believe in a utopian Socialist State.

Unfortunately, I have no doubt that liberal and neocon fascist's are firmly in control of this country. If we cannot stop this madness at the ballot box then we will have to face the unthinkable in the near future to secure our freedom. God help us.

And you're probably saying this ignoring Iraq and its similarities to Vietnam. What I'm referring to is the aftermath. What happened after the war ended? The economy turned horrible and was a trademark of the 1970s. We can already begin to see that the decade after Iraq will be another period of a bad economy. And with a government feeding on fear, we're going to see government intrusion like no other. Imagine the New Deal but written by neocons.

I would seriously like to know WHO is paying for this, really.

This has to be a PAC or somesuch, NOT the GOP. I do NOT think the GOP would do this as they have no money to do this kinda of promotion.

If push comes to shove we know who the enemy is; the enemy is not us.

I hope and pray that those in power will not act to consolidate their power this year. The next President and administration may be able to reverse this trend toward a totalitarian State. Unfortunately John McCain is one of the Fascist's who is behind this attempt to enslave us. Therefore I am afraid that if he gets elected, we are doomed to a lot of blood letting and chaos in the near future.

I do not have a crystal ball but that seems to be a logical conclusion if things continue on like they are today..

...never liked Siegelman. He was too much like the ex-governor of Tennessee Don Sunquist (aka: Tax-n-SpendQuist).

The citizens of The Heart-of-Dixie had a good chance at a Good man for their governor in (ex-Judge) Roy Moore and they voted in that loser Riley....

Siegelman may not deserve what he got for this particular case....but he needed a good kick-in-the-backside for many other things he did....

http://www.defenddemocracy.org/about_FDD/about_FDD_show.htm?doc_id=156817&attrib_id=7615

Who funds FDD?
FDD is funded by a diverse group of individual philanthropists and foundations. FDD has also received government grants from the U.S. State Department.

I think their claim for Non-profit helps them keep the info private. I am wondering how they get funding from the State Dept legally.

And SourceWatch doesn't have any funding sources, but there is other interesting info:
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Foundation_for_the_Defense_of_Demo cracies

-=================
Here's some other info they have on their site:

Shaping the Media

FDD spokespeople appear in national, international, and Arabic-language media outlets on average seven times a day, seven days a week to deliver powerful, effective messages about the need to fight terrorism and promote democratic values.

Winning the War of Ideas Internationally

Building on our numerous European activities launched in February 2004, FDD's reach is now being expanded in Europe through a partnership with the European Foundation for Democracy, an anti-terrorism, pro-democracy think tank and advocacy group headquartered in Brussels, as well through relationships with similar organizations in Brussels, Paris, London, Berlin and other European capitals.

Training Campus Anti-Terrorism Advocates

At a time when college campuses are under the sway of apologists for terrorism, FDD has trained hundreds of professors and students as pro-democracy, anti-terrorism advocates and activists. A key part of the training is an intensive fellowship program in Israel and Washington, D.C., examining how democracies defend themselves from terrorism. We also run a separate U.S.-based program that trains professors in how to teach about terrorism. As a result of our training, professors have launched new courses on terrorism and students have held hundreds of on-campus events and registered hundreds of media appearances. FDD students have gone on to jobs in the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency, the State Department, the military, the Peace Corps, and the White House and have won Fulbright and Truman scholarships to continue their studies.

Frustrated by Democrats’ refusal to bring a Senate-passed update of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to the floor, House Republicans tried Tuesday to force a vote on the bill.

Republicans tried to force a vote on a procedural maneuver to bring up the Senate bill, but the measure failed 212-198.

Instead, Democrats have begun conferencing both House passed and Senate passed versions of the FISA update—although the House version does not contain retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies, a key sticking point.

Republicans have boycotted the talks, instead insisting the House vote on the Senate bill, which received 68 votes in the Senate and would likely have the blessing of the White House. House Democratic leaders have insisted they will not be bullied into accepting the Senate bill, despite the heated rhetoric coming from the White House and congressional Republicans on the issue.

“Every day that the House Democratic leadership delays, we are losing valuable information about terrorists’ plans,” said House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) in a statement before the vote.

“That is wrong and dangerous, and I welcome any Democratic member who agrees to vote with us.”

Republicans have vowed to use any procedural resolution this week-regardless of topic to try and force the vote, which has angered Democrats.

“This is more political theater by the Republicans,” said Stacy Farnen Bernards, a spokesman for House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.). “The American people expect them to instead work with Democrats towards a solution.”
