This sentence is from the intro of an edition of the Anti-Federalist papers and I think it sums it up pretty well:


Once the people wanted help from the government more than they feared harm from it, there was no stopping the accumulation of overwhelming power in the hands of the central administration.


People will bitch about the government but in the end they won't want to break their dependence on it without either a massive reeducation campaign and an accompanying shift to personal responsiblity or a massive failure by the government.
