It kind of amazes me that a bunch of banks give out really risky loans, then when said loans start defaulting, another set of private banks prints a bunch of pieces of green papers and bails out said banks. That seems really screwed up to me.

Marshall my dear...get yourself a copy of "The Creature from Jekyll Island" and it will all become crystal clear in an interesting and entertaining way. You'll want to set off scud missles aimed at DC when you're done but you will have any and all of your questions answered.

The name of the game is BAILOUT.

Hell, with that endorsement, I'm gonna google that bad boy right now. And, by the way, didn't I hear more then a few soundbytes about how Dubya didn't want to bail the bankers out?

He doesn't have to. It's built into the system. Plus, Dubya is on a crying jag today. He's in no condition to deal with economies or that silly stuff.

that book should be mandatory reading in middle school/high school and college.

Perhaps we should all give him a hug. A really tight hug. That lasts a really long time. That way he knows that we really care about his feelings.

All right... I vote either the gold standard or a pure barter system.

Although really, why is gold worth so much? It's just a shiny metal that you can't really do anything with because it's so soft. The only thing that makes it desirable is the relative rarity and the fact that it's shiny? If being pretty to look at is what makes a certain mineral more valuable then another, isn't that really a flawed system to begin with?

It is the rarity and the fact it takes labor to produce. I think it costs over 300.00 an ounce to produce. I would make it a silver and other metals based dollar.

A pure barter system wouldn't work. It's very inefficient.

I don't think barter is a good idea, but is using a metal that the only value it has is the fact that it's pretty any better?

Gold is used in industry and electronics. It has amazing conductive properties as well as being VERY easy to work. Along with silver, it doesn't corrode like copper, so it won't ever just rust away to nothing (see the statue of liberty).

If you want to bring world HISTORY into the discussion, the discussion ends: GOLD AND SILVER IS MONEY.
