Barr Files Supreme Court Brief Against D.C. Gun Ban
Submits Brief on Behalf of Libertarian Party

Monday, February 11, 2008 at 3:00 PM

Atlanta, GA – Former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr has submitted a friend-of-the-court brief with the Supreme Court of the United States on behalf of the Libertarian National Committee. The brief is in support of Dick Anthony Heller in his case brought against the District of Columbia. District of Columbia v. Heller offers the Supreme Court a chance to settle decades of debate over whether the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to possess firearms.

Last spring, a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled the right is an individual one, and that the 30-year old ban on firearms in the District of Columbia violates the Constitution.

Barr urged the Supreme Court to uphold the Court of Appeals decision and overturn the D.C. law. Barr and the Libertarian National Committee have joined with numerous others, such as the National Rifle Association, the Cato Institute, 55 Members of the U.S. Senate, 250 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, and Vice President Dick Cheney, among many others in this effort. Barr said, “I believe in the Constitution, and the District of Columbia and Mayor Adrian Fenty have disregarded a fundamentally important right that is guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Their actions must not be allowed to stand.”
