I'm a bit of a late-bloomer when it comes to discovering the new fads and technologies that seem to move and change faster and faster (my 14-year-old sister introduced me to MySpace! :o), and it was only several months ago when I listened to my first podcast. But I'm sure I've made up for all that lost time, because I'm completely addicted to them. I listen to podcasts for probably a 1/3 of my waking life (along with visiting these forums, blogging, and other assorted net tasks). Sometimes I don't sleep at night, because I haven't caught up on my very favorites in so long. Music, talk, it doesn't really matter. I just love it all. So, I figured I'd share a few of my very, very favorites, and invite my fellow Paulites to do the same. Helping people discover great music and interesting views on current events gives me an indescribable high.

Music
-----------------

BRC Radio - The oldies podcast for people who detest oldies radio. If you're tired of what usually constitutes modern oldies programming, with stations that are notorious for only playing the big hits and obvious pop-tunes, check this one out ASAP! BRC plays a perky, refreshing mix of 50's and 60's R&B, rockabilly, and miscellaneous great old tunes. There's never any set "genre", which is a big part of what makes it so fun and unpredictable. It's never obvious, and usually plays the more obscure groups and B-sides that, in my opinion, are usually far better than the so-called "hits"!

Roots Rock Radio - Sadly, only available on iTunes for now, but a phenomenally enjoyable roots, indie, garage, and neo-rockabilly podcast. I only just started listening, but I can already tell it's one for the ages.

Vegas Vic's Tiki Lounge - This one's probably not for everybody, but if you like to explore very unique, somewhat kitschy music that is commonly known, though not exclusively defined by the labels "space-age pop", "exotica", and "bachelor pad music", you will probably get hours of enjoyment out of this excellently programmed podcast full of carefully compiled vinyl rarities that you're not likely to hear anywhere else.

The Shellac Stack - This one's even more of a "niche" podcast than Vegas Vic's. Ragtime, dixieland, and extremely hard-to-find 78's from the late 19th century through the 1940's. Even if you think you may not like this music, you might be surprised. It's got a very definite charm to it.

Alternative Classix - GREAT alternative rock from the 1980's and 1990's. Before alternative rock got co-opted by every mainstream radio-friendly group in America, this is what it sounded like. There's a bit of New Wave thrown in for good measure as well, but only the good stuff.

Talk
-------------

Free Talk Live - So famous you've probably already heard of it, but it cannot be overstated how crucial this show is to converting people who've never heard the freedom message, and how much fun it is for people who already "get it." Along with Ron Paul, FTL has been largely responsible for my ideological reprogramming away from socialism and toward free markets. It's taken off to a point where it's replacing neocon talk shows all around the country, and supporting the show with your patronage and donations can ensure that the dittohead prolefeed that is modern talk radio does not go unchallenged!

Uncovering the Truth w/ Dr. Katherine Albrecht - The woman who has done so much to hinder the march of RFID technology (you may remember her from her cameo in Aaron Russo's "America: Freedom to Fascism"), this show is an absolute must-hear. Bridging the gap between mainstream libertarian talk show hosts and the slightly bombastic Alex Jones, Dr. Albrecht knows how to talk about the issues without sounding crazy or paranoid. In fact, her show is incredibly mellow and unabrasive, but still manages to pull no punches.

Oddly enough, I subscribed to those a long time ago, but I still haven't listened to my first episodes yet!

Time to dust off my archives!
