I wasn't there, but this is what I understand to be true (I worked on the Forbes campaign in Ohio):

Forbes bought more Ames tickets than he received votes. LOTS of non-Forbes supporters found their way into his air conditioned tent (which, I think, was the only one). There are some similarities between the Romney and Forbes campaigns (though Forbes had ideas he was promoting including a dollar linked to gold--though Romney is a much better speaker/campaigner with way better hair).

My point here, is that there is historical precendent to suggest Romney may not do as well as predicted.

GWB also passed out more tickets than the votes he received. 30,000 to ....24,000 if memory serves correctly.
