I went to the caucus at Blue Valley NW. There were a LOT of people there. The lines were out of the building and down the side; and that was after I got done with the first group. They had to have multiple voting groups because the auditorium only held 900 people.
When I first got inside the high school, a guy walked up to me, reached out his hand and said, "Hi. I'm [insert name]. What's your name?" (From his first words I could tell he was a Huckabee guy. Y'know, that emotional type who have an almost-creepy charisma.)
"I'm Timothy," I said, shaking his hand.
"What are the issues that bring you out today?"
I responded by talking about Constitutionality, taxes, deficit spending, states rights, etc. Then he started to explain to me how Huckabee was against abortion and for a Constitutional Amendment. I was thinking, "Um, I didn't say that was an issue for me. I'm not a single issue voter. Thanks for insulting my intelligence."
As he continued to drone on, I thought of a post I read last night about that guy who argued with some McCain supporter in a McDonald's. "Go on the offensive," I told myself. "He won't be able to beat you. You've got ten times the brains he has." (I really do. INTJ, 3.9 GPA., Early Graduated Homeschooled Awesomeness.)
I then proceeded to say how that's a States' rights issue and the Founders left those sort of issues up to the States. He brought up slavery and how people were against that and it needed to stop. I interrupted him and said, "Actually, slavery was widely supported among the American people. Even Lincoln himself, in his first Inaugural Address, quoting a previous speech he had made, stated he was against 'destroying the institution of slavery.'" At this point he got a puppy dog look on his face and I thought he was going to cry. "But he was willing to give that up to keep the Union," he said in desperation.
I thought to myself, "You just flipped on that issue. I thought you said all the people, including Lincoln, were against slavery? You're not using facts and can't argue with me. Why are you here?" I pointed out that Lincoln was the enemy of States' rights and these issues need to be left to the states to decide. He responded with some crap I can't remember because I was so amused by the look on his face.
I think he went off in a corner and cried after that.
As I entered the auditorium I saw some Ron Paul sign and decided to sit with that group. It was sweet. When the speaking got underway, it seemed to me that McCain had more support than others, at least getting the most applause. Huckabee was a close second and Paul a close third.
The speakers were in the following order. Huckabee: an average speaker. McCain: a poor speaker, I thought. Keyes: his speaker was AWESOME! I've got to admit it. She did a very good job. Barry Goldwater Jr. was Dr. Paul's speaker. He did a good job, and got to speak last. He got a lot of laughs from some jokes he made and will do better explaining and making the case for Dr. Paul later on in the day, methinks.
It was my first time voting. I'm the youth vote. I did come out.
There are Ron Paul signs all over town at the major intersections. We'll see how the results turn out at 2PM.
