I myself think VBulletin isn't as good as a lot of free alternatives.

for a site like this, open source is good. If you are looking into running a professional site (to make money), go with vbulletin.

Open source can be more customized for making money.

Wait.....VBulletin isn't open source? I've always used phpBB, but I had assumed that VBulletin, being a web app, had to be open source (to an extent) - are you not allowed to modify the code? I'm sure you can't redistribute the edited code, but that's not really inherent in open source, just certain OSS licenses.

Does VBulletin involve off-site code on their servers or something?

you can change the code and distribute the code to other vbuliten owners. it's written in PHP

Use invision power board, that's my recommendation. I never really liked vB.
