In recent months you might have noticed an ad on LST for Chris Peden, a KSEV-listener who a few years back, with the endorsement of CLOUT, helped lead a property-tax revolution in Friendswood.

Peden is now fighting to replace Ron Paul in Congress, on the basic premise that people who live in District 14 actually deserve an elected representative who cares more about looking out for their interests in D.C. than trying to persuade a bunch of dope-smoking, Kucinich-loving college students in Seattle that America’s problems are the result of a flawed monetary policy controlled by a wealthy and secretive elite.

Anywho, how are things going?

Let’s check in with this morning’s Houston Chronicle (final paragraph):

In the neighboring 14th District, Republican incumbent Ron Paul and primary challenger Chris Peden each raised less than $50,000 in the last three months. But thanks to funds from previous campaigns, Paul had a balance of $144,000 at year’s end, twice as much as Peden. Paul can use in the congressional campaign some of the millions he raised to run for president. [LST NOTE: See update below]

Gee, that doesn’t sound too good.

Except here’s the thing–the Chronicle got the numbers EXACTLY BACKWARDS.

Here’s Chris Peden’s fourth-quarter FEC report; scroll down to Line 27, “Cash On Hand At Close Of The Reporting Period” and you see $143,949 dollars and 92 cents.

Here’s the fourth-quarter FEC report of the Most Honorable Man In America; Line 27, “Cash On Hand At Close Of The Reporting Period” reads $66,225 dollars and 34 cents.

Whoops.

Of course, Dr. Paul is allowed by “law” (really just “regulations” issued by an unconstitutional and illegitimate so-called “Federal Elections Commission”) to shift some of the millions he’s raising from across the nation as part of his Presidential run to his congressional campaign coffers… but that really wouldn’t be very honorable, would it?

After all, those millions were donated to support Dr. Paul’s pursuit of the presidency, not to keep his grubby little hands on a congressional seat… right?

UPDATED– As of noon, the Chronicle has erased it’s earlier error, Soviet-style, without a trace.

They will be noting that Peden has twice as much money Cash-On-Hand as Paul, no?

Ron Paul - Just Another Career Politician
by BigJolly | 12/19/2007 12:21 pm | Alert moderator

When he isn’t calling people fascists for saying Merry Christmas, inciting his minions to disrupt other presidential campaigns or running around the country flirting with the idea that Bushco brought down the Twin Towers, the honorable Dr. Ron Paul is a congressman.

His army of anarchists, anti-war peaceniks and somewhat sane Libertarians like to say that he is a “different kind” of politician. Turns out he’s just another ordinary career politician, earmarking pork for people in his district. Before voting against it for appearance sakes, of course.

“Congressman Paul intends to file for re-election to his Congressional seat,” Paul’s Congressional spokeswoman Rachel Mills told Roll Call in an e-mail. “He will probably do so closer to the deadline.”

So much for a citizen legislature. 20 years and counting? Well, maybe not.

My first reaction to a story about Paul possible losing the congressional race was to laugh it off. But that was before the honorable one lost his last remaining marble. There are a lot of people in his district that say “Merry Christmas” without the slightest inkling that it is a secret code phrase for fascism.

And when these people start asking questions about that, they are going to find that Ron Paul is the only candidate being endorsed by racists and fascists. Perhaps, when they look, they will ask, is there anyone else running for CD-14’s seat?

They will find that there is indeed another choice. A solid, sane, conservative choice. A guy who, because of the activism of KSEV Radio, Edd Hendee and CLOUT, decided to get involved in the process and make changes. Chris Peden.

Chris was one of two CLOUT endorsed candidates that was listening to KSEV when he heard Edd talking about Ron Cox testifying in Austin against appraisal caps, decided he had had enough, and led the taxpayer-friendly takeover of Friendswood city council a few years back.

From his website:

I am a proven conservative Republican; the incumbent is a self-described Libertarian. I support winning the Global War on Terror and the War on Drugs; the incumbent does not. I think Islamo-Fascist terrorists were responsible for the 9/11 attacks; the incumbent thinks America’s Middle East policy’s were responsible for the attacks. I support fully funding NASA’s budget and the Vision for Space Exploration; the incumbent does not. I will support and vote for the Republican nominee for U.S. President in 2008, the incumbent will not (unless it’s him).

So yes, there is a choice for all those fascists out there who use the term, “Merry Christmas”.

Chris Peden's Cash Redux

While ostensibly undertaking a correction of the mathematically inept Houston Chronicle, author David Benzion has another purpose in mind - to show, as he puts it after repeatedly reminding his readers that Peden first attained his Honorability with the backing of KSEV, that

Peden has twice as much money Cash-On-Hand as Paul, no?

He is referencing, of course, the $143,949.92 that Peden reported "on hand" at the end of last year's 4th reporting quarter. This figure naturally seems like an impressive haul, and numerically it is considering that Peden finished the prior quarter with a stunning $363 in the bank. So where did this sudden cash influx come from? Another pundit from Dan-Land attempts to explain:

Read Peden's report yourself, and you can see exactly where the money came from. I’m sorry to say you’ll be disappointed, unless you consider people like a CPA, an orthodontist and a pastor to be “corporate masters.”
It’s also interesting to note that all of Peden’s money is local — it comes from towns like Houston, Friendswood and Crosby.

This intriguing take appears aside a critique of the Chronicle's shoddy reporting standards, but a closer look reveals much more in common than a simple coinciding placement. You see, the majority of Chris Peden's cash haul from the last quarter, and to be specific $150,424.49 out of $174,750.80 raised (of which $143,949.92 remain unexpended on banner ads), did not simply come from "local" addresses in towns like Friendswood. It came from one single address in Friendswood: 1878 Flat Rock Street, as in the abode of the candidate himself.

One "William Chris Peden" of 1878 Flat Rock Street, as in the Honorable Mayor Pro Tem of Friendswood, also happens to be the aforementioned CPA who keeps donating to the Chris Peden for Congress campaign. Let's take a look at what this "man of the people" has managed to give himself:

Donor:
William Chris Peden
Peden & Associates, LLP
CPA

Carry-over loan balance - $14,428.02

4th Quarter loans from Chris Peden to Chris Peden -
10/01/2007 - $129.33
10/04/2007 - $21.61
10/06/2007 - $99.86
10/11/2007 - $1,000.00
11/29/2007 - $12,000.00
11/30/2007 - $18,000.00
12/07/2007 - $59,875.00
12/10/2007 - $20,000.00
12/31/2007 - $25,000.00

Grand Total: $150,424.49

Of the remaining actual donations from persons other than the Honorable Chris Peden himself, approximately half came from his relatives, Messrs. Bill Peden, also of Peden and Associates, and Greg Peden, of the Alvin Chevron station each gave the maximum allowable donation of $4,600. Ellen and Lois Peden, co-managers of the Hope Village Tea Room. similarly maxed out, bringing the Peden Family's self contributions to a total of $16,100 for the quarter.

That places just over $166,000 of Peden's claimed total haul of $174,000 "in the family."

The moral of the story: when you can't raise more than a couple hundred bucks for your lousy candidacy from the common folks, it never hurts to cut yourself a couple of $25,000 checks. It also helps when the primary recipient of your advertising budget is willing to your attempt to buy a seat in Congress as an outpouring of neighborly support for your cause.
