A big part of the Amazon appeal is the "free" national exposure.

I completely agree. I preordered on Amazon anyways. Ill be buying a few dozen copies from my local bookstore to give my extended familys. My uncle loves politics but is a McCain supporter, maybe this will convert him so his soul doesnt go to satan. Ill also mail one to my cousin in Iraq.

The real bestseller lists (on NYT, etc.) are established by the publishers, in their reporting of number of books ordered from them within a given period. While the amazon.com list is easy and accessible, it's not really reflective of where a book stands on the BSL.
