And Paul placing 2nd in many states (3rd in others, and 4th in a few...)

Is not getting a first place finish REALLY that bad?

Delegate wise?

If the states are not winner take all - a few 2nd place finishes could put him ahead of someone getting first in... say.... WV.... and not placing above Paul in another state?

In your typical caucus state, it doesn't matter what the percentages are. All it matters is who stuck around to vote in delegates.

Right - but a 2nd in all caucus states - with no one claiming first in all the states - would that win over a person with some firsts and mostly thirds?

Assuming that the 1sts are divvied up so that no one was a clear winner?

You need 51% of all delegates to have an outright win at the national convention. That isn't going to happen for anyone. We simply need to be competitive in a brokered convention.

It IS going to happen (it has to, those are the rules), but, yes, it may take more than one vote.
