Council Bluffs, Ia. - Texas Congressman and presidential aspirant Ron Paul told supporters Tuesday he is not a radical candidate but a conservative Republican in the most traditional sense who believes in limited government, personal property rights and the U.S. Constitution.

"I believe we have a government and a party that have been masquerading as conservatives," he said. "Why are we called 'radical' when we believe in defending our own borders and not the borders around the world?"

Paul's Iowa stop was one of several in recent days as he and other GOP presidential candidates gather support for Saturday's Republican straw poll in Ames.

He also launched 30-second television ads Tuesday in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Sioux City.

The candidate barely registers in the polls among his Republican contenders.

The 200-plus Council Bluffs supporters consisted mostly of college students and young families.

At age 71, Paul is the oldest candidate in the race for the White House.

Paul said he's received tremendous support from young people.

"Parents will say, 'The kids see you on the Internet and watched your videos and got us involved,' " he said.

As a congressman, Paul voted against the Iraq war and said troops should be withdrawn.

"We're wearing our military personnel down," he said. "We keep sending them back there again and again."

Paul said he doesn't feel safe from terrorism because of U.S. involvement in the Middle East, and that the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, could have been prevented had pilots been allowed to carry weapons - a personal and constitutional right.

"I think the Second Amendment would have prevented 9/11," he said.

Paul, a former obstetrician/gynecologist who opposes abortion, is a strong advocate for rights spelled out in the Constitution.

He refuses to vote for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution.

"Our message is correct," Paul said. "Our message is true and clean, and that is to defend the Constitution of the United States."
