Paul takes Judith Basin County
A surge in grassroots support made Ron Paul the top vote-getter in the Judith Basin County Republican caucus.
Judith Basin and Sheridan counties held their caucus meetings in the afternoon. Most of Montana’s counties aren’t voting until this evening.
The race for Republican and Democratic nominees for president reaches a fever pitch today as 24 states hold primaries or caucuses.
Montana Republicans are getting in on the action, holding caucuses in each county throughout the day.
Judith Basin party chair Bill Warren said 15 people were eligible to vote in Judith Basin County. Those people were made up of any Republican office holders, precinct committee members and party officers.
Warren said that in the last week he and other caucus voters each received roughly 20 phone calls and another 20 e-mails from presidential candidates lobbying for votes. But the grassroots effort in support of Texas Representative Ron Paul matched all of the other candidates – front runner Arizona Sen. John McCain, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee – combined.
“I think Ron Paul will do really well in Montana,” Warren predicted. “He made a lot of extra effort, a lot of contact. I think for rural Montanans, he is really pushing the idea of saying no (to spending.) I think that resonates.”
In Judith Basin County, Paul received five votes, Huckabee and Romney each had three votes and McCain had two votes.
