Key comment:

"The old taunt reflects a deep economic principle: Talk is cheap, but if someone is willing to risk money, it means they're serious," writes Tim Harford of Slate.com, a general-interest publication offering analysis and commentary about politics. "Put the principle into action and you realize that electoral forecasters should pay as much attention to the betting odds as to the opinion polls.

"When money is on the line, informed people, perhaps including insiders, have an incentive to turn their knowledge into cash by making big bets. In the process they make the odds more accurate. And of course, there are several reasons to lie to pollsters, but no reasons to make a money-losing bet."

Ron Paul Talks to Gambling911: "The Internet Should Not be Regulated"

2008 Presidential candidate Ron Paul sat down with Gambling911.com's Kira Wissman for a few moments Friday night following his speech at a rally in Mars, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh. The time spent was brief since Paul had to rush out on his way to Iowa the next morning.

Since the Iowa debate this past weekend, Ron Paul may be drawing the most press coverage yet with his heavily featured sound byte "just come home" - referring to the troops in Iraq. He also received significant applause. Paul was the only candidate during this Republican debate who felt the same way that 70% of the nation did - They want out of Iraq.

------

While heading down the Pennsylvania Turnpike on my way to the Ron Paul Rally in Mars, PA, I was thinking about what to expect. “Maybe 100 or so people filling a small banquet room” – that’s what I was expecting. I pulled into the parking lot at the Four Points Sheraton, and quickly realized how wrong I was. The parking lot was jammed. I took one of the last spots in the lot, and I was 45 minutes early! The cars in the lot resembled something you would see at a Jimmy Buffett concert – many were painted with various slogans all supporting Ron Paul for president.

There were thousands of people streaming into the event. As I walked into the lobby of the hotel, I was greeted by volunteers handing out posters, t-shirts and bumper stickers. I made my way to the conference room where the rally was to be held and found a seat relatively close to the front. I was sitting near a group of people from Ohio who had driven a long way to see Dr. Paul speak. There were groups from Philadelphia encouraging the crowd with cheers and chants. The entire room was alive with excitement and anticipation.

Shortly after 8pm, Dr. Paul’s press secretary, Jesse Benton took the stage and introduced Dr. Paul with a short speech and a video clip that showcased the campaign thus far. Soon after, Dr. Paul took the stage and began a speech that lasted nearly an hour and a half. He covered many topics – all of which supported a basic theme – one’s individual freedom.

Ron Paul on Fox News Sunday

The bulk of his discussion dealt with our foreign policy and our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. He believes wholeheartedly that our troops should be brought home, and that no wars should be fought without a true declaration of war from congress. He said that America’s foreign policy was seriously flawed, and it began many, many years ago when Woodrow Wilson was in office (after World War I). He tied that in with a discussion about our country’s inflated spending practices and vowed to cut foreign spending by more than half.

The crowd got particularly excited when he discussed disbanding the IRS and the Federal Reserve System. He believes in our monetary system being backed by gold and silver and says that people would be free to use gold and silver as currency. To clarify the I.R.S. issue – Dr. Paul believes that the individual income tax is unconstitutional and would abolish it. Many have asked how the government would fund itself without the individual income tax. In reality, only roughly 48% of the federal government’s funding comes from the individual income tax. The rest comes from business taxes, trading taxes, communications taxes, etc.

Entrepreneurship was also high on his discussion list. Starting a business in this country has become prohibitively complicated, and this is one of the main reasons business has been moving overseas. Accomplishing anything in this country without government involvement has become nearly impossible. Dr. Paul is committed to simplifying the process and bringing America back to its roots.

I had spoken with Jesse Benton, Dr. Paul’s press secretary, before the speech and he had offered to arrange a short interview with Dr. Paul after the rally. All of Dr. Paul’s staff are very familiar with Gambling911.com and its extensive coverage of Dr. Paul’s campaign. After the speech, I was taken to a back room, where I had the chance to speak briefly with the Congressman.

I asked him about his stance on internet gambling, and the bill he is co-sponsoring with Barney Frank (a Democrat). He said that Congressman Frank had approached him about co-sponsoring the bill to legalize online gambling and he had agreed.

“I believe strongly that the internet should not be regulated by the federal government and believes even more strongly that people should be free to engage in the activities they wish, as long as they are willing to take responsibility for their actions.”

I also asked about the likelihood of such a bill passing. He agreed its chances were remote because of the stigma attached to the internet.

“The majority of people in Washington were afraid to support the internet for fear it would label them ‘pro-porn’ or ‘pro-gambling’.”

Dr. Paul is certainly not falling prey to this peer pressure. He has stepped ahead of the crowd in support of what he believes in most – freedom for all Americans. He is truly a candidate without a secret agenda. His desire to return this country to its roots – the constitution – is refreshing after listening to the quibbling and double talk of the other candidates.

After our chat, I walked to my car with a renewed sense of hope for this country, believing for the first time in a long time that there may be a way to fix the mess that had become the federal government. The Presidential campaign is just beginning to heat up, but I think that all the usual Republican candidates had better take a good hard look at Dr. Paul and his message. He is a force to be reckoned with.

They need to worsen Giuliani's odds and put McCain at about 1,000,000,000,000 to 1.

If they did that, I'd definitely be putting down $10. Then it'd be a win-win scenario. Even if Paul didn't win, I'd have a decent shot at being $10 trillion richer.
