So what happens to delegates committed to a candidate who has dropped out of the running? Are they free for the taking, or are they split by % or something like that?

Along with that, I hear of this magic number of delegates needed to secure the nomination for a candidate. How is that decided exactly? Is that like 1,192 delegates voting for a certain candidate in the first round at the convention? Or do only the committed delegates count....?

Hi Tyke,

Depends on the state. They all have different rules "binding" their delegates. Most likely is that they would be "released" by the candidate to whom they were bound and "recommended" to support the one endorsed by their candidate.

To be the nominee, one needs the support of a majority of the delegates.

Does the endorsement of the dropped candidate actually bind their vote in some states?

Thanks for the answer^^
