OK, so I've read that in order to get the nomination in a brokered convention a candidate must have 50% of the delegates in 5 states. It seems to me that, mathematically, in order to win that one would need at least that.

So my question is, does Ron Paul need 50% of delegates in 5 states walking in or if he picks them up on the second or third or fourth ballot will that do?

From what I've been told the criteria is winning the majority in 5 states.

Yeah, I read that, but I'm curious if that means winning a majority in 5 states on the ballot you win on, or a majority walking in?

To be elected as the nomination for the Republican Party, you have to be nominated. To do that, you must have the majority of delegates in five states as a support. Now , the question is whether or not we have to get that before the Roll Call Votes or not.. if we do, then we have to get it before the first vote or suspend the rules.. If we don't, then we can try to swing the 5 state majorities after the first vote to nominate him as a possible vote in the role call.

Win a majority of the delegates.

Can existing delegates from candidates that pulled out, who would change to Ron Paul count in this 50%?

For example say Huckabee pulls out?

Any delegates of candidates who have dropped out become unbound if they were bound.

Any delegates of candidates who have dropped out become unbound if they were bound.

In some cases.

Some states still bind them for x number of votes. Some states dictate they be bound to another candidate. Some states do unbind them.

We're working hard in Iowa to get a majority of delegates to the national convention!

So count us in. That's one state!

So, if we walk in there with a majority in less than 5 states but pick up enough delegates for a majority in 5 states on the second or third ballot Paul qualifies to be nominated?

Louisiana hopefully will =) especially if Huckabee pulls out. Pro Lifers don't like McCain or Romney.

On any ballot, one needs to demonstrate a majority of delegates from at least five states.

Yeah, this is definitely an issue. Because of the winner-take-all states it's likely Romney and McCain will qualify. If we can qualify and Huckabee can qualify there's a good chance at a brokered convention.
