MOVILLE, Iowa -- Mitt Romney was the clear winner of the presidential straw poll conducted by the Woodbury County Republican Party at its booth at the Woodbury County Fair at Moville.


More than 300 voters participated in this year's poll.

Romney captured 27 percent of the votes cast while 17 percent of those participating in the poll said they still were undecided. Rudy Guiliani came in third with 14 percent, followed by Tom Tancredo with 8 percent; Michael Huckabee, 7.6 percent; John McCain, 7.3 percent, and Samuel Brownback, 6 percent. Ron Paul, who did not receive any votes in the Plymouth County straw poll, garnered 4 percent in the Woodbury County straw poll, followed by the unofficial candidate Fred Thompson with 3.3 percent. All of the other candidates received less than 2 percent of the vote.

Illegal immigration was the issue of most concern to 34 percent of the voters participating in the straw poll. Abortion came in second with 26 percent. The war in Iraq was the major concern to 15 percent, the economy to 12 percent and taxes to 7 percent.

Fifty-seven young people participated in the straw poll conducted by Woodbury County Republicans for those under 18 years of age. The clear winner again was Mitt Romney with 23 percent. Michael Huckabee finished second with 18 percent and Ron Paul third with 16 percent. Rudy Guiliani and undecided were tied for fourth with 11 percent, and John McCain and Tommy Thompson were tied for fifth with 7 percent. Abortion was the most important issue to 35 percent, the war in Iraq to 28 percent and illegal immigration to 16 percent.

Noone knows him, but to me he needs a forceful immigration stance, enforce the laws, border security, and then a review of our immigration policies. Just say it.

Why is this a poor result? For someone polling at 2% or less nationally, a finish of double that is good, especially when most of the media there is probably not covering him.

All the focus is on Ames. Not county straw polls a few days before Ames. I'm not too surprised.
