Agreed. While his views on slavery were less than admirable...his other positions established his legacy as an American patriot.

PS: Did you guys know that Clemson University should be called Calhoun? It's on Calhoun's old land but the guy who sold the land (he had married Calhoun's daughter) to the government of South Carolina demanded that the town and the college be named after him (Clemson) rather than Calhoun

Yeah, well the thing is... there was a declaration of war on Wednesday May 13th 1846. There was some saber rattling and defensive posturing on both sides prior to that as well as some minor skirmishes and battles.
