It is not a scam.

The links when you click on them do look funny as they should go right to Amazon or B&N and don't.

it's simply a referral site, nothing too underhanded about it. They said they would donate any affiliate profits to RP.

eventhough "http://www.ronpaulbookbomb.com/buy/amazon/" stays at the top (the whole amazon page is likely in a frame) the preorder button is legit.

if you right click it and go to properties you will see:

<http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0446537519?ie=UTF8&tag=ronpaulbookbomb-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0446537519>

it's all ok. relax.

It's wierd how the URL doesn't change, I'll give you that!

edit: explained above. And yes I can log directly into amazon from there.

what is important is the link you click to pre-order, and it's amazon

It's not a scam.

Just a way to donate a little more money to the campaign, while at he same time, raising awareness for the book... and allowing the person hosting the site to pay for the hosting fees.

I'm not so certain.... It had me concerned too - the URL at the top not changing? That was one thing, the other strange thing was that when I tried to login, it wouldn't login. I went to amazon.com and it worked fine. So I immediately changed my login info in case they were farming for info. I dunno whats going on there, but be careful.

FRAMES 101
Let's talk a little web 1.0 :)

browse to http://www.ronpaulbookbomb.com/buy/amazon/

This is the url that the site links to.

now, press the alt key, then the "v" key, and then the "c" key
This will show you the source (vista might make you verify access)

now look at the source....
<
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Frameset//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/frameset.dtd">
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Ron Paul Book Bomb - Buy at Amazon</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<FRAMESET cols="100%">
<FRAME src="amazon.php">
</FRAMESET>
</HTML>
>

a page called "amazon.php" is a 100% frame, meaning the whole page. So this is a page within a page.

But now we ask... what is amazon.php?

Let's find out, since there is no directory for amazon.php, it must be in the directory we are already in. so now browse to:
http://www.ronpaulbookbomb.com/buy/amazon/amazon.php

Watch how this php file simply redirects to the real amazon site. this is what is happening inside the frame.

Now go donate $25 to Ron Paul since I had to take time to give this lesson.

That's all cool - and i assume it's legit, I just like to be safe than sorry. Why it wouldn't accept my login isn't explained by your web 1.0 tutorial (believe it or not, used to do web developement fulltime... not saying I was any good or anything ;P) Besides, I donated much more than $25 today ;P

Personally I would think it would be very Stupid if the person does NOT use affiliate links. Maybe I am biased, being an affiliate marketer myself, but I don't see the point leaving the money on the table. If you dont want the guy( guy/girl/company/group/whatever) to make 80 cents to $1.20 or whatever the Amazon payout is, why not/who cares.

If it is being donated thats a good way to donate a couple grand easily. And hell I wouldn't mind giving the guy his buck ( or go through my own affiliate link) for his troubles.

It is very common and pretty standard in web business to make affiliate and other referral links masked and/or redirects within the domain.

All these posts about this damn site... the money made by an affiliate comes out of Amazon's cut! Always!

In other words, WHENEVER you buy something on Amazon you should first go to your favorite indy site, click on some Amazon link (if they have one) and buy your stuff. You just 'donated' to them and helped them pay their web hosting fees.

Definitely, but one should think twice about nesting it like this in frames - this thread wouldn't have ever started ;D

This guy went to the trouble of making this website and this has played a big part in making this book purchasing go viral.

It costs nothing more to buy the books through his links.

For god's sake, let the guy make a few bucks to cover his time and expenses. He'll probably donate what he makes to the campaign anyway. If he wants to keep his smallish profit then good on him I say. More than well deserved and costs us nothing.

Just for the record, I went through my frame tutorial to prove the site was legit and not a phishing scheme (since the nested frame caused confusion). I am not against the affiliate angle of this.
