He's doing a great job of hitting press in the areas he doesn't have "events" persay. Awesome article for this area that is very liberal and a univesity crowd. Hopefully this goes to print tomorrow and isn't just on-line.

Ron Paul outlines campaign platform

GOP presidential hopeful Ron Paul said his growing, grassroots supporters turn to him not because they want more from their government, but because they want it to leave them alone.

“We just need to follow what we have,” he said to the Press-Citizen’s editorial board today, alluding to his belief that the country should just govern itself based on what the U.S. Constitution spells out.

The Congressman from Texas outlined his campaign platform Monday using his limited-government beliefs. Paul, who has spent some of his political career as a Libertarian, said the problems the country is facing now in the areas of foreign policy, health care, education and economy are the result of too much government oversight.

“What we have today is the result of government,” he said. “And then we go and say, ‘A little bit of government didn’t work, so we need more government.”

To start with foreign policy issues, Paul said the country has long forgotten its policy of non-intervention around the world, and the result is costly.

“It’s a big contributor to the financial problems we are facing,” he said.

Paul said his position with Iraq was fairly clear — it was a mistake to invade the country and the move was not debated enough beforehand, there were no weapons of mass destruction and there was no connection to Al-Qaeda.

“We have just marched in and we should just march out,” he said.

Paul said the country is now unified in its opposition to the United States, and to avoid conflicts with other countries in the Middle East, namely Iran, we need to leave in a “deliberate fashion.”

“We have precipitated a lot more hatred than anyone can imagine,” he said.

Paul said his stance on some domestic issues fits closely with how he has assessed the situation in Iraq.

For example, he said telling people they have to use a government-controlled health care system is “just as offensive to me as promoting democracy overseas.”

Paul said he thought if the government backed out of the health care arena, the market would correct itself. Patients should be able to negotiate directly with their doctors about fees, he said.

“We have to get (health care) out of the hands of third-party payers,” Paul said.

Government oversight on education should also be scaled back, he said. This involves repealing No Child Left Behind and a dissolution of the Department of Education, he said.

“I’d just let teachers teach and let communities take care of it and let school boards take care of it,” Paul said.

Paul said his support has been growing, mostly on the Internet, and he feels like he just joining something that existed before he announced his candidacy.

“I’ve sort of joined a campaign, rather than creating one to join,” he said.
