In an ideal world, I'd be a socialist to some degree.
In a Utopian society, there would be no poverty, everyone would have free housing, transportation and food. Robots would do all the menial labor jobs, and people wouldn't need money for survival. If you wanted to improve your social status you'd join the marketplace.
The problem is that human nature brings out greed and power-hungry control freaks. The more government we have the worse a job it seems to do. While Dennis is an honest politician, the vast majority of politicians aren't. The more power and responsibility that is given to the government, the more open it is for abuse.
I am libertarian, because I simply do not trust that the government can be uncorrupted enough for socialism to actually work. Socialism is a nice idea, but it is not the world that we live in.
With a libertarian government, a true free-market economy really can raise the standard of living for humanity. With less government, there is less potential for corruption and abuse of power, and with more freedom people can show charity and compassion because they aren't so focused on just surviving.
