Two Americans Detained In Kidney Racket
U.S. patients held at Indian hospital on suspicion of illegally buying organs.
By KAREN RUSSO
MUMBAI, India, Jan 29, 2008—

Two dialysis patients from New York are being held in India on suspicion of involvement in a crime ring that forced poor Indians to give up their kidneys for transplant, authorities announced today. The two Americans have not yet been charged in a crime, but police are "examining" the situation, said Manjit Ahlawat, joint police commissioner of the city of Gurgaon in Haryana state.

Indian authorities identified the patients to ABC News, which is not publishing their identities until conducting further verification. The patients are undergoing treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi.

They have been forbidden from leaving the country because they were believed to have been waiting for an illegal kidney transplant.

Police last weekend swooped down on the alleged ring, which officials estimated stole 500 to 600 kidneys from poor people in Gurgaon, a high-tech city on the outskirts of New Delhi.

The kidneys were transplanted into the bodies of wealthy Indians or foreigners. Five foreign tourists, including the two Americans, were found Saturday in what police described as a "luxury guest house," awaiting kidneys. There was reportedly a transplant waiting list of some 40 foreigners from at least five countries.

The mastermind behind the scam is believed to be Dr. Amit Kumar (also known as Dr. Santosh Raut), whom Mumbai police have been pursuing since 1993. The doctor had previously been arrested in Delhi in 2000 for involvement in the illegal trade of organs.

Unsuspecting victims of the scam said they were promised a job, then taken to a private house and forced at gunpoint to sell a kidney. The transplants occurred inside the house, which was equipped with a hidden state-of-the-art operating room. Those who sold their kidneys received about 50,000 rupees, or $1,300 although wealthy clients were said to have paid 10 times that amount.

Some victims said they had not agreed to sell their organs but were "given some money so they wouldn't talk" after their kidneys were stolen from them, Ahlawat said. These people reportedly received between $1,280 and $2,560.

Many victims were told that they needed to undergo a blood test screening for a potential job, only to wake up to find they had undergone surgery and had a kidney extracted.

"I was approached by a stranger for a job. When I accepted, I was taken to a room with gunmen," Mohammed Salim told India's local NDTV television channel. "They tested my blood, gave me an injection and I lost consciousness. When I woke up, I had pain in my lower abdomen and I was told that my kidney had been removed."

Suspicious neighbors said they had noticed blood running out of the house's gutters, as well as blood-soaked bandages and even bits of flesh thrown into an open lot near the house, according to Reuters.

The doctor accused of heading the group may have fled the country and as many as 50 medical officials may have been involved in the racket, according to police. A spokeswoman for Interpol told ABC News that the agency had not been asked by the Indian authorities to issue an international arrest warrant.

Detectives from Mumbai, where the doctor allegedly ran a previous illegal kidney racket, are working with authorities in Gurgaon.

Ya...I remember it. An Indian company just bought my company...a U.S. company. A result of them getting out of U.S. Dollars and into U.S. assets. My new insurance plan is through the Indian company and it sucks!!!. Now I have higher deductibles. Oh, but wait!!! They will allow me to have major surgery with a $0 deductible if I fly to India to have my surgery. Can you believe this crap??????!!!!!!

So basically:

Show up for a job intervew; have blood taken.

They inject you with something.

You wake up hours later with a pain in your abdomen.

They pay you 1,500 to keep quiet.

Wow, some people are just trash.

This wouldn't be a problem if we could legally trade organs here in the US. Just another useful activity being outsourced due to regulations.

outsourced

That's how I posted it on another board. The Ron Paul supporters will certainly chime in.

Of course people should be able to sell their body as it is their property. What moral authority does any other individual have in using force to interfere in this freedom of contract?

Here in San Diego we have massive chronic shortages of blood and people die. But for these massive shortages many of these people would be alive.

Why do we have massive chronic shortages?

Blood is a good and subject to the laws of supply and demand. There are price ceilings of $0 for compensation for blood. Because the price is so low this results in less supply of blood. If the legal supply price were raised from something other than $0 then more people would dispossess themselves of blood. If any artificial price distortions were removed then the supply/demand economics would be brought into equilibrium, all the blood that is needed would be supplied and less people would die.

But some stupid government official probably took a bribe from the Red Cross to implement a price ceiling of $0 to keep out the competition (people who possess blood) and allow the Red Cross to sell their blood supply (obtained from uncompensated donors) for a higher price because of the artificial scarcity. The only alternative is that the government official is just plain ignorant on economic matters in which case he has caused a lot of needless deaths with his 'well-meaning' legislation.

I hope God is particularly harsh to any government official for their intentional or grossly negligent behavior who is responsible for this legislation that but for it many more people would be alive. This is yet another example of governmental tyranny and murder of our fellow citizens.

I think Ron Paul would be cool with selling organs voluntarily. It is a lot of time, and expense, and risk, even in donating your organs. Why shouldn't you be paid? It would drastically reduce the waiting lists for organs, and save thousands of lives.

Not really, but they need money to survive because they are poor.

The liberals would argue that this would encourage murders just to harvest some $$$ from the organs.

I agree with Dr. Paul.

I thought blood banks use to pay for blood.

I use to donate blood to the red cross until I read about some of the scandals they've been involved in. Now I donate blood to hospitals.

Seriously I'd rather the hospital get it for a price of free than buying it from the Red Cross.
