The 6 part documentary Liberty: The American Revolution really highlights some interesting parallels between 1776 and the current struggle.

The 2nd episode (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1886145627130631491) talks about how the revolution started out as 13 separate regional protest movements against British power. The parallel being that today the protest movements exist as separate issues rather than regions.

Also, Common Sense by Thomas Paine... which is credited with really igniting the Revolution was published in 1776 and sold an estimated 150,000 - 600,000 copies. The modern parallel would have to be the documentary Zeitgeist... which has topped Google Video since late last year and has stayed there day after day. (Nobody knows how many times that the movie has been viewed, but it was at over 5 million views before they stopped keeping track). It has been released in multiple languages.
