Well, to make up for it, I just put a 2x4' sign at the end of my highly-traveled street here in GA.

Paint a new Ron Paul sign on plywood and secure it to a 2x4. Cement the new sign into the ground. Too much trouble for someone to steal.

The real question is: what on earth makes these people so motivated to steal personal property? Who is doing this?

I honestly think the news reports of the first person to receive a load of buckshot in their ass for stealing signs placed on private property, will probably end that game.
