Ron Paul Roundup (01-26-08)

Hello Freedomphiles! The Shreveport Times is writing (http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080126/ELECTION/801260331) about the Louisiana caucus:

Unofficial results from the caucus show McCain with more of the state convention positions than any other presidential hopeful. Paul follows, while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney finished third.

Paul's campaign contends that hundreds of voters were forced to file provisional ballots because of mistakes by the Louisiana GOP.

About 500 voters at statewide caucus sites were not shown as registered Republicans on voter rolls. Those voters were allowed to cast provisional ballots, which are not included in current tallies.

Paul's campaign also states that caucus locations relied on a voter list from Nov. 1, though party rules state that voters must be registered Republican by Nov. 30.

In addition, Paul's campaign contends that at the time of the original Jan. 10 deadline, Paul had the largest number of delegates pledged to him. But later, the party extended its deadline to Jan. 12, allowing candidates to file more delegates.

A call to the state GOP office Friday was not returned. But according to the organization's Web site, state party staffers are working with registrars of voters throughout the state to confirm the eligibility of each voter.

Other outlets are writing about the debates. Top-diamond libertarian David Powers writes (http://www.nolanchart.com/article1450.html) on The Nolan Chart:

It is eight months later and the field has narrowed down to five. We have 3 liberals (McCain, Romney and Giuliani), one theocrat (Huckabee), and one Constitutionalist (Ron Paul). If I need to explain why McCain, Romney and Giuliani are liberals you have joined this game very late.

Let's take a look at the liberals: This is the team the GOP leaders want you to choose from. Just take a look. The GOP could care less if they elected Hugo Chavez as long as they can beat the democrats. I'm sorry, but all I see are democrats. Not only democrats, they're liberals! This is your best to beat the dreaded democrats? Any one of these guys could be a democrat.

Then we come to the most entertaining. Why is Huckabee a theocrat you may ask (only if you are Hellen Keller)? Well this is the man that said he wanted to change the Constitution to fit god's word. But where is the love? He has all these "evangelicals" voting for him yet he has no money! If they really loved him they could give him some of the money that's paying for the pastor's wife's new Mercedes S Class. That would be nice!

Then we are left with Ron Paul, the scholarly nerd from Texas. He is such a threat to the system, that even though he is the biggest GOP fundraiser, he can't buy a lick of airtime on the Mainstream Media broadcasts. He has come in second in the Nevada and Louisiana primaries and most people don't know his name.

And Right-Libertain John Armstrong also writes (http://www.nolanchart.com/article1448.html) on The Nolan Chart:

That Ron Paul, he's something else. Rudy said that he and Mitt had talked backstage about which questions they were going to ask each other beforehand. I guess that kooky ole 10-time Congressman from that insignificant little state called Texas was probably sitting all by his lonesome reading some boring economics papers during that quid pro quo conversation.

For the last eight years Texans have had to listen to the national and international media imply that they, and all Americans for that matter, are stupid by Presidential association. Granted, Ron Paul may be the only candidate less eloquent that GWB, and Bush's MBA from Harvard is just about as impressive as Paul's MD from Duke on paper, but that's about where the comparisons end in the intelligence horse race. When Texans vote after Super Tuesday, they may want to consider putting someone in office to remind the world that America didn't become the world's lone Superpower by bombs alone.

Since Democrats have been seen as the "intellectual elites" for so long, perhaps Ron Paul's intelligence is hindering his progress within the party he has served for 20 years. Maybe he wasn't asked a question by his rivals because they didn't want to give him a chance to put his intellectual prowess on display. Or maybe they have finally figured out what the rest of the media did a month or two ago: the only way to beat this man is to silence him. He doesn't have to explain position flip-flops. He doesn't blame the democrats for everything. He blames the same thing all Americans do during non-election years when we're not caught up in our rah, rah Party Politics: Washington in general. Not the people--the politicians.

As the economy takes center stage this election season, Ron Paul is by far the most qualified to speak on economic issues. And the rest of the field knows it. They have to keep him quiet.

And also on The Nolan Chart, Right-Libertarian Michael writes (http://www.nolanchart.com/article1445.html):

As the programming wrapped up, in the final closing seconds, MSNBC's Chris Matthews announced the results of their cell phone poll. You could tell that he had intended to hype up the results but was at the same time taken back by the results--Ron Paul had come in at the closest possible second in their own poll!!! Romney came in at 41% and Ron Paul came in at 40%!!! The other three divided the spoils with pathetic single digit results! Matthews said something like; this is unexpected, sort of opposite ends of the spectrum, blah, blah, blah...

This was sweet! This was a good nightcap to an otherwise deplorable, unfair and to be expected media manipulated event!

Of course the media pundits will shrug this off as over-zealous Paul supporters responding in unison and calling in more than once--can you spam a cell phone poll? Just as they will the vocal responses and applause to Paul's statements during the debate--GREAT!!! A vocal and mobilized minority can win an election--but this is more than that. The vocal and mobilized Silent Majority can definitely win an election--maybe, in this instance, the Silent Majority shouted!

Centrist-Libertarian RK Chase comments (http://www.nolanchart.com/article1442.html) on The Nolan Chart that the debate needs to move back to foriegn policy:

Recently Mitt Romney dismissed Ron Paul's warning against acting over-aggressively toward Iran following the speedboat incident by saying, "I think Congressman Paul should not be reading as many of Ahmadinejad's press releases." It is odd that the media and the Republican Party in general find this to be an acceptable response, and no attention has been given to Romney's inablility to address the issue in the weeks since the debate.

Well, that is not entirely accurate. The progressive and highly democratic blog, crooksandliars.com, took notice of Romney's cop-out. Even though the website leans toward Edwards, they give a surprise compliment to Paul's ability to calmly and rationally analyze the situation. Ron Paul understands that foreign policy involves more than an aggressive military, and he takes the time to understand what other nations are communicating. We all saw Reagan and Rumsfeld shake Sadaam Hussein's hand, yet the Bush Whitehouse was able to vilify him in the eyes of Americans. This is problematic to say the least.

"Yee-haw!" is not a foreign policy. This switch to the economy in the coverage of the Presidential primaries is providing a distraction from the foreign policy debate and allowing candidates like Romney, and of course Giuliani, to get away with their intellectual absenteeism regarding the role of the Presidency.

Furthermore, it is obvious that our foreign policy is in no way benefiting the economy. There are only a select group of people getting rich in the last eight years - the oil companies and the military-industrial complex. Hundreds of bureaucrats from the Department of Homeland Security and other "terror protection agencies" have taken lucrative jobs in the private sector with companies that produce the bombs and rebuild the bridges (with our tax dollars.) The war is a gaping money pit draining the economy. So by letting the candidates appear on FOXnews (and also during the Fox coverage of the Super Bowl!!!) and talk about tax cuts, the media is effectively distracting voters from the real issues at hand. Issues which require knowledge not only of the economy, but also knowledge of Ahmadinejad's press releases.

Middle East Online is talking (http://www.middle-east-online.com/english/opinion/?id=24059) about Ron Paul and other longshot candidates:

Ron Paul has earned his reputation as "President Of The Internet." Receiving enough hits, page views, myspace friend requests and you tube views that dwarfs the other candidates, the results of which justifies the title.[1] In a single day his internet based grass roots supporters generated over 6 million in contributions, the single highest amount on record, yet his opponents label Ron Paul as a "long shot." Fox News, mainstream media and republican elites have all ignored "The Ron Paul Revolution." Obfuscating its significance contrary to the reality of his internet grass roots popularity, they deny its existence by degrading its significance or labeling its adherents as pseudo voters.

Have we forgotten America's long shots?

George Washington was a long shot when he crossed the Delaware River, the surrender of Cornwallis was a long shot, the D-Day invasion of Europe, the defeat of Nazi Germany and subsequent liberation of Europe, surrender of Japan, yes even Iwo Jima were all American long shots. Anyone obtaining the label of a "long shot" follows a lasting legacy of American patriots that forced their way to freedom and liberty against tyranny and oppression by tenacity, endurance and fortitude.

The truth is, the only "long shot" is Ron Paul's uphill struggle against media control of mass communication and political apathy. Fox News' refusal to include Ron Paul in the January 6th New New Hampshire "debate," as well as excluding him from coverage is prime example of this effort. That refusal is a violation of the FCC, since excluding Ron Paul could not be in "the public interest," but only services a hidden agenda of special interests subverting liberty, freedom and the Constitution.

The Evening Sun is reporting (http://www.eveningsun.com/localnews/ci_8085149) of a rally for Ron Paul supporters:

"Ron Paul is a true American" was the theme in the conservative-packed attic of the Ragged Edge Coffee Shop, 110 Chambersburg St., Gettysburg, Friday night.

Nearly 30 people came to speak about the Republican candidate's views on America and try to get Adams County involved more in trying to put him on the ballot for election.

The Gettysburg College graduate believes in low taxes, free markets, and helping out our veterans, according to his Web site.

"I, for one, think the man is brave," said Steve Baugher, 55, of New Oxford. "Not many congressmen would stand up for what they believe in."

Baugher has been a Paul supporter since early 2007 when he said he saw there was a man in office who believes in the U.S. Constitution.

The meeting kicked off with ideas on how to bring Paul's message to the area.

LifeSite is reporting (http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2008/jan/08012517.html) that Ron Paul is good on abortion, at least according to them:

"The debate about when life begins should not be a debate," Rep. Ron Paul told the tens of thousands of marchers rallied together on the Washington Mall. "Let me assure you that all life begins at conception."

Paul, an OB/GYN doctor who delivered more than 4,000 babies in his career, told the crowds that in medical school he "quickly learned" that "when I dealt with a pregnant woman I always had two patients."

Paul has sponsored pro-life bills such as H.R. 300, which would nullify the legal force of Roe v. Wade by removing the ability of federal courts to interfere with state laws regarding abortion. Paul also wrote legislation that would define life as beginning at conception (H.R. 1094) and renewed his call to make legal protections for life from conception.

"You cannot defend liberty without defending life," Paul firmly stated.

Paul has gained the endorsement of Norma McCorvey, "Jane Roe" of Roe v. Wade, who is reported in a press release from the Paul campaign as saying, "He has never wavered on the issue of being pro-life and has a voting record to prove it." McCorvey goes on to say, "He understands the importance of civil liberties for all, including the unborn. "

And the South Florida Sun-Sentinel is talking (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-flbpaulpeople0126pnjan26,0,1902081.story)about the supporters:

Presidential hopeful Ron Paul is anything but a mainstream candidate, so it stands to reason his supporters should be a little unconventional as well.

And highly motivated.

Paul's adherents take to the street with signs, preach to neighbors, organize precinct teams and Internet fundraisers — all for the Republican contender given little chance of becoming president by polls and pundits.

Why expend such energy and enthusiasm for what most likely is a lost cause?

Political experts, and Paul partisans themselves, say in some aspects it's a function of youth — among whom Paul has sizable support — along with a hunger for someone genuinely different and the desire to send a message, even in defeat.

"We know Ron Paul's chances of getting elected are not as great as we would like them to be, but we feel we have to get out there with his message, and his message is one of truth and hope for America," said Sharon Thomann of Lake Worth, a 46-year-old auto body shop owner.

And finally, The Miami Herald is reporting (http://www.miamiherald.com/campaign08/story/394298.html) on a Ron Paul supporter who is doing a lot of walking:

A supporter of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has given a new meaning to the phrase ``voting with your feet.''

New Hampshire resident Kelly Halldorson, 34, hopes to walk her Libertarian-leaning candidate into the hearts of Florida voters by hitting the streets and walking from Boca Raton -- site of Thursday night's presidential debate -- down A1A to Miami. She started the trek at about 5 a.m. and by 10:30 a.m. she had made it to Fort Lauderdale, about 20 miles away.

''I did a walk back in August of last year, back in my home state of New Hampshire, and it generated a lot of interest in the campaign when we really hadn't had any at all,'' said Halldorson, shortly after walking past Las Olas Boulevard. 'I thought, `What can I do?' And I thought, 'Oh, I'll go to Florida and do it again.' ''

So far, Paul, who has a widespread base of support, has won more delegates than former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and came in second in last week's Nevada caucus. But Paul still lags behind the major candidates in Florida polls, ranking in the low single digits.
