Where do they get the numbers?

One thing when looking at my walking list today that popped into my head, is how they get the numbers.

I think the campaign bought the registered voter lists in the 50 states. They may have also done surveys of what issues appeal to people in certain regions/counties.

I don't think that many people have been polled, otherwise my family would've been polled by now, especially considering the last time my parents failed to vote was a special city council election they forgot about until 10 min. before the polls closed.
