Republican Polls - McCain, Giuliani, Romney, Thompson, Ron Paul

Washington D.C. 8/2/2007 11:30 AM GMT (TransWorldNews - Top Story)

When taking a look at the republican polls as clearly pointed out by USA Election Polls, it is a validation of the notion that what the Brits call the blue rinse brigade has indeed deserted the party. Thus it is not surprising that Zogby is showing Rudy Giuliani to be clearly favored over the candidate previously thought to be the golden boy: John McCain. While in the past McCain could have rightfully assumed to be given the nod because of his service record and also his personal life, the much more flamboyant Giuliani is stealing the show.

It is unclear whether these republican polls indicate that the older conservatives have modernized their views, or if instead even the conservatism professed by the party’s favorites is perceived to be only skin deep, and thus voters are now looking for someone with a proven track record of leadership in the time of crisis rather than someone who in theory might know what to do but who is currently considered to be rather untried.

Interestingly, the republican polls reveal that certain candidates who are acting as the proverbial stalking horses are forcing the more mainstream hopefuls to grapple with the issues they bring up time and again. The ensuing infighting within the party makes for great TV and even better sound bites, but it also shows that the party is at a crossroads that demands a wooing of the unaffiliated voters as well as the libertarian and moderate democratic ones. While it is unclear whether the survival of the party is dependent on it, the ability to win the election might quite possible hinge on this ability.
