Don't know if its only one delegate, but this year, they all count. And yes, people live there. Of all places I've lived, Hawaii is the BEST - hands down. Plus, I think Hawaii's delegates come with a beautiful flower lei. :D

MODS:Please don't sticky, please don't move.

Hawaii Caucuses begin this week! Here's the weekend schedule
Know what state House district you are in and where and when the caucus meeting is!

Friday 25 January - Thursday 7 February 2008: Republican Party Precinct Caucuses are held during the last 7 days of Janaury through the first 7 days of February. Each Precinct Caucus chooses the precinct's delegates to the Hawaii State Republican Convention.

There is no formal system applied in the Precinct Caucus to relate the presidential preference of the Convention participants to the choice of the precinct's delegates to the State Convention. The participants at each Precinct Caucus alone determine if presidential preference is to be a factor in such choices and, if so, how it is to be applied.

Friday 25 January 2008: House District 10
Saturday 26 January 2008: House Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 24, 25, 26, 27, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45

Hawaii Update

Yeah, this is a very, very, very Democratic state. But in some ways that works to our advantage, because we just need a few people here and there to win our caucus. Of course being such a Democrat state, that also means we only account for about 20 of the 2,000 delegates at the National Convention (since they allocate delegates based on population, plus # of elected Republicans).

Hawaii has a weird caucus system. From Jan 25 - Feb 5 registered Republicans meet up and selected locations, and select delegates to the state GOP convention in May. People selected as delegates show up to this GOP convention and vote on the 17 at-large delegates to the national convention. Last year there were about 300 delegates. There's lots of good news and bad news.

The bad news is that we only have about 160 people confirmed, and maybe up to 200. Also there is more competition in the state, being a contested Presidential election, so that 300 number might rise.

The good news is that in prior years, district chairs could fill the vacant seats with whoever they wanted, as long as they were registered Republican and from the district, up until convention. This year they only have a week after the district meeting to get delegates, suppressing the amount of people going to convention. Also, we vote for delegates, so while other camps (Giuliani, Mccain, and Romney have campaigns here) split their vote up, we should be strong. So even with only 30% we have a shot at getting most of the at-large delegates.

Bad news is that the main Hawaii GOP is aware of what we're doing, but the good news is that they are not actively hostile, and have been totally fair when dealing with each of the campaigns here. So if we don't make it, it's not because of sabotage or dirty tricks. Also, because the convention is in May, people may lose their energy and decide not to attend the actual convention.

I guess that's a summary of what we have so far.

In the general election, Hawai'i has the same four electoral votes as New Hampshire.

but at the GOP convention they are more important than New Hampshire -
and their 20 delegates are close to the 30 that Michigan has for the convention.

Also, it is a great place for publicity -
because people go back to the mainland after their vacation -
and of course on Oahu their is a substantial military presence.

How about big Ron Paul rallies in the parks along the Kihei coastline?

Here's a article talking about the Hawaii caucuses, couple RP mentions. Btw, it looks like we won't see any 'official' results till Feb. 5.

http://starbulletin.com/2008/01/26/news/story08.html

"I would not be surprised to see people at our caucus say, 'Vote for me, I'm a Rudy Giuliani or Ron Paul guy, and I want to carry his principles to the convention,'" said Bob Kessler, chairman for the Waikiki district. "There might be some Mitt Romney or Mike Huckabee guys sitting on their hands and saying, 'Yeah, right, like I'm going to elect you as a delegate.'"

"None of the Republican candidates has emerged as a favorite in Hawaii. John McCain, Giuliani and Paul are most frequently mentioned, with Romney and Huckabee seeming to trail."

I became a delegate today for Ron Paul!!! I'm from the Big Island and our caucus went awesome, we probable got about half the delegates by my estimate. Mitt Romney and the mormon posse got the other half. Rudy had one representative there and I didn't see any Huckabee people, but they could have been incognito as well.

It was awesome, we all went in as "undecided voters" and stuck to our guns. All for the revolution!!!!!

Ron Paul will do well in Hawaii, at least second by my guess.

Note: Also, from what I have seen, I am guessing that most of the other precincts will do just as well or even better by my guess. There is a strong Ron Paul grassroots out here on da islands. I'll post any updates that I receive as soon as I receive them.

Results won't be in until May, when the GOP has their convention. We can 70% of the delegates, but if nobody shows up at the convention, we'll lose.

I don't think we are going to report how many delegates we estimate (at least I hope nobody from Hawaii posts it). We don't want to let the other side know how many people we have.
